What is RO Purifier

RO purification is the advanced technique that helps to purify water, it works on the Reverse Osmosis technology, which uses a semi-permeable membrane that helps to remove impurities from water. The pressure is applied to the water to pass through the membrane make the water less concentrated. The molecules greater than 0.0005micron are filtered out through RO membrane, the dissolved particles, microorganisms are also removed. The impurities that are removed in RO filtration is Fluoride, Lead. Chlorine, pesticides, detergents, nitrates, sulphates., etc.,

The drinking water is not secure since all water are contaminated with impurities, the water comes from various sources like pond, reservoir, rain water, river water and groundwater, the pipes that supply water and tank that stores are also not clean they contain bacteria, virus, mud, bad odour, taste hence it requires purification. What is UF water Purifier

The water filtration has become a necessary thing, since water is mostly contaminated and not suitable for drinking. There are many techniques available for the water purification, Reverse osmosis purification, Ultrafiltration, Ultra-violet disinfection. Depending on the type of water the purifier varies.Ultrafiltration is an advancement in water filtration that helps to remove the impurities suspended in water. The principle behind UF water purifier, using gravity it pushes the impure water is poured from the top layer, the purified water is collected in the bottom layer, it doesn’t require electricity for the UF filtration. It works with pressure on the  water and also it is suitable for tap water also. It helps to remove the microorganism and organic impurities and make the water safe and pure. 

The UF pore size is bigger than RO membrane, the difference from RO that UF doesn’t require electricity, it can be used in any place and suitable for frequent power issue areas. UF helps to maintain the water taste and it doesn’t require any chemical for purification. Electricity has become a major issue in many places hence UF is purifier is suitable for all locations. The mechanism for reverse osmosis, microfiltration, ultrafiltration are all the same, they differ only with the size of pores in the semi-permeable membrane.

There are many types of membrane available, tubular modules, hollow fibre, spiral-wound modules, plates and frame. 

Tubular membrane is made of polymeric membrane that is kept in plastic material, the steel rod and the size of it is 5-25mm and length of 5-25, the disadvantage of this membrane is low permeable, low packing density.

Hollow fibre is made of tube and shell arrangement, the size of the membrane is 0.2-3mm the drawback of this membrane is the maintenance cost is high. 

Spiral wound modules is made of flat membrane layer and separated by thin meshed spacer material, the sheets are rolled on central perforated tube, the maintenance cost is affordable

Plates and frame is flat plate that is separated by mesh, the size of plates are 10-60cms and height various from 0.5-1mm 

Principle behind UF purification

The purifier uses the hydrostatic static pressure to pass through the permeable membrane.

J = TMP

J is the Flux flow rate through membrane

TMP is the Transmembrane pressure

𝜇 is the solvent viscosity

Rt is the total resistance of membrane and fouling resistance

The purification is based on pressure of the water, the strategies are flowtype, flow velocity, flow temperature. The flowtype can either be crossflow or deadend flow. 

Crossflow

The cross flow takes place in parallel direction to the membrane surface, these are preferred for continuous operations as the membrane removes solids. 

Deadflow 

The deadflow occurs in the direction that is perpendicular to the membrane surface. The configuration of deadflow it is suitable only for batch operations.

What is TDS in water

In day to day life water has become more contaminated and contains more harmful chemicals hence best filtration technique is required to filter the water and make it consumable. The water contains more TDS, TDS means Total Dissolved solids that are harmful chemicals in water. It indicates the total concentration of dissolved elements both organic and inorganic substances. The substances that are greater than 2 micron are termed as dissolved solids. The inorganic elements that are present in water are magnesium, calcium, potassium. When the mineral density is low it doesn’t affect the health but when the density level is high it affects the body The TDS level in water that is advices by EPA secondary regulation is 500mg/litre is the maximum contamination water. If the water TDS level is more than 1000mg/litre, then it is not recommended for drinking. There are many instruments to check the TDS level of water. If the TDS level is less than 300mg/l then it is advised as pure water, if the value is 300-600mg/l then it is rated as good, 600-900mg/l then it is fair, 900-1200mg/l then it is por and not advisable for drinking.

The pH also decides the water quality, the pH level must be 6.5-8.5. When the TDS is less than 50mg/l then it does not contain any mineral in water and are not acceptable, 50-500mg/l is acceptable for drinking, 500-1200 is not acceptable, can be used after RO purification.1200-2000mg/l is not acceptable for drinking, can be used if you have RO purifier that purifies TDS level upto 2000mg/l, above 2000mg/l is not advisable for drinking. By removing TDS from water it helps to make the water tastier and healthier, it reduces the hardness of the water.

The TDS level can be checked in home itself using 2 methods:

  1. Digital TDS meter
  2. By using Filter Paper and Scale

Digital TDS meter

The digital TDS meter helps to check the quality of water, hardness of the water and confirms whether it can be consumed.

Switch ON the meter, now press the TEMP button to check the temperature of the water, it indicated in celsius metric, to change to TDS mode again press the TEMP button. Remove the cap of the metric, keep the meter in water upto the maximum immersion level. Make sure there are no bubbles in the water and wait till the measurement gets stable. Now press the HOLD button to view the reading. If the reading shows x10 then the reading is multiplied with 10, it is the TDS level of the water. Again close the protective cap and keep it safe.

By Using Filter Paper and a Scale

This is an old method that is easy to find the TDS level. For this method you require strelized beaker, filter paper, stirring stick, a pipette, an evaporating dish, measuring scale. measure the evaporating dish in milligrams and note as “A”. Add the sample water in sterilized beaker and stir it well to make the suspended particles present evenly in water, using the pipette measure 50ml of stirred water. Add the water 3 times in the filter paper, you will find sediment present over the filter paper, now add the sediment to the evaporating dish and let it dry and calculate the weight of the evaporated dish and mark it as “B”. To check the TDS from A and B here is the formula TDS = {(A-B)*1000}/ml

How Much TDS is Good For Health

Water is an essential thing for humans, the source of water is groundwater, borewell and municipal water. The water is contaminated from natural sources, sewage, industries and agricultural waste, these factors cause water not suitable for drinking. They cause TDS in water. The Total Dissolved Salt level in water must be in the range of 150-300mg/litre which is approved by WHO is only suitable for human health. The water contains various particles like  pH, dissolved oxygen, color, odour, hardness, microorganisms and TDS.

The pH level also decides the drinking water either it is soft or hard water. The pure water contains pH level of 7, lower to this range is acidic water and higher is basic water. The normal consumable pH range is 6.5-8.5. Hardness in water is because of the calcium and magnesium. Total dissolved salts contains both organic and inorganic substances in water. The dissolved oxygen is the oxygen dissolved in water. 

TDS is the total dissolved solids that indicates the inorganic salts and organic materials in water. Mostly water contains calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, carbonate, hydrogencarbonate, chlorine, sulphate and nitrate anions. If the TDS level in water is less than 300mg/litre, if the range is between 300-600mg/litre its good for drinking, if its 600-900 the water is fair, if the range is 900-1200 its poor water, if the level is above 1200 its cannot be used, also water with low concentration cannot be used since they cause adverse effects to the body.

The analytical method for measuring TDS is using specific conductivity, it uses conductive probes that measures the ions in water, the measurement is then converted to TDS value. High concentrated water is measured using gravimetric. The TDS can be measured at home using TDS meter, electric conductive meter, filter paper and weighing scale. The TDS meter helps to measure the TDS content in water, it’s very simple and affordable technique. The  electrical conductivity meter measures the TDS level through electric current and measures it resistance. The filter paper method uses filter paper to measure the TDS and weighing scale helps measure the weight of both evaporating dish and filtrate and weight of the evaporating dish alone.

TDS = {(A-B)*1000}/ml sample

Where A is the weight of the evaporating dish and filter and B is the weight of evaporating dish.

The technique that helps to reduce TDS in water are carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, distillation and deionisation. The Reverse osmosis technique helps to reduce the TDS content in water. There are various purifier models available in market for the purification. This doesn’t remove TDS totally but helps to reduce the TDS level and make it consumable. The Distillation method is the conventional method to reduce TDS, the technique produces the water vapor through boiling water and passed through cooling surface and again transformed to liquid, this helps to reduce the TDS. The TDS below 1000mg/litre is not advised for drinking also below 150mg/litre is not suitable for drinking. The techniques doesn’t eliminate TDS but it reduces the TDS level in water.

How to Remove TDS from water

The Reverse Osmosis technique helps to reduce the TDS level and make sure the water can be used for drinking. The purifiers contain inbuilt cutting edge technique that helps to reduce the TDS level. RO forces the water under pressure through a membrane, the substances that are less than 0.0001 microns are passed out through the membrane and is free from TDS.

Distillation is one of the techniques to remove TDS, in this the water is boiled and vapour is formed, the vapour is cooled back to the liquid form, the dissolved particles are unable to vaporize hence it stays back in the boiled product.

Deionisation is used for removing TDS, the contaminated water is allowed to pass through positive and negative electrode. The ion selective membrane first separates the positive ions from water and forwards to negative electrode. By this step the TDS stays back and produce deionized purified water is collected.
