How Much Water To Drink In A Day?

Every day you are losing water by sweat, breath, bowel movements, and urine. For the human body to function properly, you would have to replenish the water supply through the consumption of food and beverages filled with water. 

So, how much water should a healthy and average adult have? As per the National Academies of Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering, the adequate amount of daily fluid intake is roughly about 15.5 cups (i.e., 3.7 liters) of fluids for men, 11.5 cups (i.e., 2.7 liters) of fluid for women. 

Now, these recommendations of fluids are from water, food, and other beverages. Roughly 20% of the daily fluid intake is available from food, and the rest is from drinks.

Advice Regarding 8 Glasses Of Water A Day

You might have heard this advice of having an 8-ounce glass of water each day. Well, this is easy to remember and one of the reasonable goals too. Many healthy people would be able to stay hydrated by consuming water and other major fluids and feeling thirsty. But for certain people, less than eight glass of water each day might be enough. And for other people, it might be more. 

Factors Influencing The Need Of Having Water

Many factors can influence the requirement for taking fluid. Some of the major ones are –

1. Exercising

Doing exercising activity will make you sweat. So, you would have to drink water to cover up for the fluid loss.

2. Environment

Humid and hot weather will make you sweat, thereby necessitating additional fluid intake.

3. Breast-feeding or pregnancy

Women who are breast-feeding or pregnant will require additional fluids for being hydrated.
