Carbonated water is normal water infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. Due to this, a bubbly drink is created, and this is called as sparkling water, soda water, club soda, fizzy water, etc.
Besides the seltzer water, the carbonated water will contain salt (i.e., the salt will be added), improving their taste. Even a small amount of minerals will also be included.
Natural sparkling mineral water like San Pellegrino and Perrier are quite different. Such water is taken from a mineral spring. They would often have sulfur compounds and minerals. Plus, they are carbonated too.
If you check, tonic water is like carbonated water, and it has a bitter compound known as quinine. This is supported by sugar or any high amount of fructose corn syrup.
Is Carbonated Water Acidic?
Water and carbon dioxide react chemically, and this produces carbonic acid. Frankly, this is a weak acid that stimulates the same kind of nerve receptors, just like mustard that is present in your mouth.
You would really start to suffer from a burning and prickly sensation. This would be really irritating as well as enjoyable too. Here the pH of the carbonated water would be somewhere around 3-4.
So, it means that it would be greatly acidic. But you do have to realize that consuming acidic beverages like carbonated water won’t make your body acidic.
Most importantly, your lungs and kidneys would remove the excess amount of carbon dioxide. Now, this would keep your blood rightly a bit alkaline pH of 7.35-7.45 irrespective of what you have consumed or drank.
